PortalPlayer, Inc. Launches Preface Developers Program

New Program Facilitates Development of Gadgets for Microsoft Windows SideShow

SAN JOSE, Calif. May 23, 2006 – PortalPlayer, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLAY), a leading supplier of semiconductors, firmware and software for personal media players and secondary display-enabled notebook computers, today announced the introduction of its Preface™ Developers Program. Designed for hardware, software and web developers, the program facilitates real-time testing of gadgets and other mini-applications for personal media display (PMD) equipped notebooks running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system and Windows SideShow.

There are a growing number of gadgets available to consumers as leading on-line search engine companies are offering applications like world clocks, games, calendars, flight trackers, weather updates and more. The PortalPlayer Preface Developers Program allows developers to bring gadgets to mobile consumers. Through the program, PortalPlayer provides a reference design that developers can use to create and test new gadgets to work with Preface-enabled notebooks and Windows SideShow. By making the multimedia capabilities of the Preface technology available to key developers, PortalPlayer will enable the creation of many new entertainment and productivity applications that leverage the power of having a second, Always On interface as part of the notebook.

"This is a truly exciting time of innovation for developers and hardware providers alike," said Michael Maia, vice president and general manager of the PortalPlayer Personal Media Display division. "In addition to more than 100 of our reference designs that Microsoft has already deployed, we are making our platform available to the Windows Vista mobile ISV and IHV community, so they can develop new gadgets that have the ability to improve the way people interact with their personal data on the go."

About Windows SideShow-Enabled Gadgets

Many developers are currently writing a variety of gadgets that will run in a Windows Sidebar. With a few additional steps, gadgets can be extended to support the mobile Windows SideShow display. In doing so, traditional desktop applications can be used by more people in new and interesting ways.

Windows SideShow-enabled gadgets are mini-applications that appear on the second display in a PMD-equipped notebook that provide access to useful information that is either stored on the notebook or available on the Internet. The specific content available depends on the status of the notebook, whether it's on, off, or in standby, and the gadgets configured on the Windows Vista SideShow screen.

Windows SideShow-enabled gadgets give users the ability to customize their personal media display by letting them choose functions and capabilities that cater to their specific interests and needs. For example, an online e-mail provider may wish to create a gadget specific to its e-mail client. Users would be able to download the gadget and have the ability to access their e-mail from their personal media display, saving time by not having to boot up their computer. Additionally, with Preface, the information can be Always On, where users can access their information while the notebook remains in standby mode or when the battery power is low.

About the Preface Developers Program Reference Design

The reference design provides developers tools to create, test and run SideShow-enabled gadgets. Developers connect the Preface reference design board into an available USB port on a computer running the Microsoft Windows Vista development environment and load and configure their gadgets using the Windows SideShow configuration screen in Windows Vista. The board includes a display and all of the necessary documentation.

PortalPlayer's Reference Design Platform is currently available for $1,500 per unit. PortalPlayer expects the Personal Media Display solutions to be available in conjunction with the upcoming release of Windows Vista.
